Hotel Las Islas: Committed to Sustainability in the Colombian Caribbean

Near the Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo National Natural Park, Hotel Las Islas stands as an enclave of sustainability in the Colombian Caribbean.

Committed to conservation and as one of the hotels in Cartagena, we harmoniously share the space with three unique ecosystems: mangroves, dry tropical forest, and coral reefs. From the beginning of our project, we have prioritized the preservation of these natural wonders.

Thus, sustainability is a fundamental pillar in Aviatur's strategy. We aspire to be a leader in tourism, valuing tourism responsibility, resource efficiency, and environmental preservation as essential aspects for the sector's future.

Our sustainability policy focuses on proactively addressing environmental and social challenges to generate a positive impact and share our commitment with stakeholders.

  • Economic growth and responsible consumption

At Hotel Las Islas, we pay special attention to preserving marine life and terrestrial ecosystems. We are actively committed to the conservation and restoration of these unique environments, recognizing their intrinsic value and importance to the global ecosystem balance.

Environmental Projects

  • Red Mangrove Planting:

As part of its environmental commitment, Las Islas carries out a red mangrove planting project to contribute to the health of marine and coastal ecosystems. Currently, the seedling nursery can germinate over 8,800 red mangrove seedlings, which will later be planted in the Cholón marsh, where deforestation of these species has been identified.

These restoration efforts aim to conserve the mangrove ecosystem, involving the local community, hotel staff, and environmental authorities.

Between 2022 and 2024, 7,840 seedlings have been planted. The next planting day is scheduled for July 26, 2024.

  • Coral Planting

Since 2018, the hotel has supported a coral recovery project in Barú, led by the Malpelo Foundation and Conservation International. This initiative seeks to protect seven coral species, two of which are critically endangered.

The project focuses on creating coral structures using corrugated rods to increase coral coverage. It also promotes environmental awareness among local youth, training them in coral gardening and encouraging their participation in marine conservation.

  • Social Projects

Baruleras: The hotel purchases blankets and pareos from single mothers involved in the Baruleras project, led by the Aviatur Foundation.

Local Workforce Employment: Hotel Las Islas aims for a positive social impact on the Barú population. Currently, most employees are from nearby communities such as Ararca, Santa Ana, and Barú. We support local suppliers such as artisans, fishermen, eco-guides, and recycling companies to preserve culture within our services and contribute to improving people's quality of life.

Craft Showcase: The hotel has a craft store featuring products made by local artisans.
